Jim Jones/Xavier Jernigan/Ryan Leslie talk Twitter & Social Media

This panel was a definite highlight for me when I was volunteering at the 140 Characters Conference last week in NYC. Good content for anyone interested in picking the social media brains of some major characters is the music game. Namaste -Yogi George-

R.I.P Guru

A lot of you know by now, On Monday it was a sad day for hip-hop, Gang Starr's Guru passed away on Monday at the age of 43. I will always remember Guru and Gang Starr as the ones that made me not stop listening to hip-hop. My Favorite song by Gang Starr was and always will be is skillz. The song has a lot of meaning to me because it was one of the first songs I started listening to when I started to listen to hip-hop. R.I.P Guru

This is what DJ Premier had to say about Guru
"I will celebrate Guru's life ... I will honor his memory ... I will grieve with the Elam family over his untimely death ... I will remember the Gang Starr foundation and all of the original members of Gang Starr who came before me — we all know each other ... mostly, I will cherish everything we created together as Gang Starr, forever. I'm gonna miss hearing his signature monotone voice when he walks in the room, but the songs will always bring it back to me ... His rhyme flows were insane, and I will never remove him from my heart and soul. Rest in peace to the man who felt 'satisfaction from the street crowd reaction.' I love you Goo ... DJ Premier."

Lab Instructor on

Hey everyone. The other night I decided to make a mashup mix of How Low and Tik Tok. The mashup was posted on, which led to it being posted on The Hype Machine. Check it out and click the heart if you like it! It's got one day left on the charts, and it's in the top 20! Here's the link: Ludacris vs. Ke$ha - $hwagger Jagger (Pres Mashup)

Hope you like it!

PS: This was made in a couple of hours using Ableton Live, which the Lab is now offers lessons in, and I'll teach those lessons.

The Lab Welcomes Chad Bechard

Starting, Monday April 12th Chad Bechard, will be introducing Digital DJing 101 using Ableton 8 Live! For more information on scheduling lessons, payment and course description please email us at

Chad Bechard, or Pres, has been DJing for 7 years, and all of that lawn mowing and time spent DJing in his basement is starting to pay off. He has also been producing his own music since he was 16. When he was a senior in highschool, he received a grant to support digital music production in a school that had no music production program whatsoever. He has had music featured on the popular blog The Hype Machine. Pres is also currently the lead composer and sound designer for the video game Planck created by Halo 3 producer Matthew Burns. Catch him every Thursday night in downtown Burlington DJing at Rasputins, WRUV Radio and gigs for RedBull North America.

Welcome to the Lab family!

DJ's Of The Month: MSTRKRFT

MSTRKRFT (pronounced "Master-craft") is an electronic music group from Toronto (The Beaches), Ontario, Canada who are signed to Dim Mak Records (wiki). On Saturday, April 24th, the duo will be headlining UVM's Spring Festival. Lab instructors Chad Bechard aka Pres and Zack Johnson aka ZJ have been invited to DJ an opening set. Good luck guys!!

If DJ's Are the New Rockstars...

Maybe this is the new DJ? This instrument is called the Eigenharp, and it has a drum machine on the bottom, two slides for simulating bowed instruments, 100 programmable buttons, a mouthpiece that enables accurate sound synthesis for wind instruments, and a live looper. The only downside about this instrument: It'll cost you about 5 G's for the version you see here. This guy is covering the song "Building Steam With a Grain of Salt" by DJ Shadow, and he does it perfectly. This is absolutely nuts. Here's the official website for the Eigenharp (LINK). Props to Auston Montville for showing me this.

Go Go Gadget: MacGyver Edition

"Has this ever happened to you? You’re ready to drop the set of your life to an eager audience when a technical issue threatens to spoil the evening. Panic stricken, your eyes dart around the room for a sound guy, who of course is absent or non-existent"-DJ Tech Tools MORE
